WCA Volunteer Casino Night
The next Westgate Community Association casino will be Friday, February 12th and Saturday, February 13th, 2027, at Cowboys Casino. The funds raised provide WCA with some financial stability, enable us to improve and expand programs, support lifecycle and maintenance costs for the community hall, and contribute to the overall well-being of the community.
Why do non-profit organizations participate in casino nights?
The Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis Commission’s (AGLC) Charitable Gaming Model allows non-profit organizations to manage casinos through volunteers in order to raise revenue for the organization. Non-profit organizations are allotted two nights of casino shifts every eighteen months. These events are tremendous opportunities for:
Revenue Potential – Casino fundraisers present an excellent opportunity to raise substantial funds in a short span of time. The AGLC regulations allow non-profits to retain a significant portion of the proceeds, making it a lucrative option for fundraising.
Community Engagement – Hosting casino events engages both volunteers and community members. It fosters a sense of unity, as individuals come together to support a common cause. These events provide an opportunity for non-profits to showcase their mission and raise awareness.
Why are volunteers integral?
Volunteers are critical to running a successful casino night. We are looking for more than thirty volunteers to help fill shifts during WCA’s casino in February. Each volunteer plays a crucial role in ensuring the event's success. These are the volunteer positions:
General Manager (GM): The GM oversees the entire operation and is responsible for the smooth running of the event. They verify, witness, and oversee transactions. They ensure that AGLC regulations are strictly followed, and all activities are executed smoothly.
Banker: The banker is responsible for managing the float of chips and cash. They fill chip orders as required from the gaming floor and witness ‘cash outs’ from players through the Cashier. The Banker assists the GM in supervising the Cash Cage.
Cashier: Redeems player’s chips for cash and ensures they have a witness for all player cash-outs over a set amount.
Chip Runners: Chip runners are responsible for delivering chips to gaming tables and retrieving them when needed. Their quick and efficient service ensures that games run smoothly.
Count Room Supervisor and Staff: Twice during a shift, a meticulous count of all proceeds takes place in the count room. The supervisor and staff ensure that all financial transactions are accounted for accurately and recorded in the computer system.
What is the impact for non-profit organizations?
The funds raised through casino events can have a profound impact on Calgary's non-profit organizations. Here's how they can benefit:
Financial Stability: Non-profits can achieve financial stability through casino fundraisers. The funds raised can cover operating expenses, ensuring that the organization can continue its vital work without financial strain.
Program Expansion: With the share of the profits from participating in the casino, non-profit organizations, such as the Westgate Community Association, can expand their programs and services. This means reaching more individuals and having a greater impact on the community.
Improved Infrastructure: Many non-profits can use the funds to improve their facilities and infrastructure, providing better services to their beneficiaries. Profits from previous casinos have helped WCA purchase
Longevity: Casinos are a reliable way for non-profits to secure a sizeable amount of funding that can help ensure the long-term viability of an organization.
By choosing to support non-profits that run casinos, you are not only enjoying a night of entertainment but also playing a significant role in making a difference in Calgary and beyond.
The blend of community involvement, responsible gambling practices, and a shared sense of community values will make WCA’s casino fundraiser a win-win for all involved. If you are enthusiastic about volunteering for Casino Night, please email info@westgatecommunity.ca.
